Fundación Salud de la Madre Tierra (HOMEF)
Los nigerianos rurales están viendo cómo los ríos y las aguas subterráneas de los que dependen se envenenan debido a la producción de petróleo y gas. Pero incluso mientras crece la demanda mundial del petróleo de Nigeria, la Fundación Salud de la Madre Tierra se está organizando con las comunidades para proteger sus hogares y el medio ambiente.
Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) es un grupo de expertos ecológico y una organización de defensa nigerianos de renombre internacional que trabaja para defender el agua y las vidas contra la destrucción causada por la industria extractiva. Se esfuerzan por anteponer las necesidades reales de las personas y el medio ambiente a las ganancias corporativas y al poder gubernamental.
La promoción y la concientización son partes enormes de este esfuerzo. Documentar y denunciar las malas conductas corporativas y dar a conocer sus delitos ha permitido lograr que las empresas rindan cuentas. HOMEF reconoce que el progreso es imposible sin coordinación y solidaridad entre movimientos, por lo que colabora con una variedad de grupos que luchan contra la economía extractiva, incluidos movimientos alimentarios liderados por campesinos y comunidades indígenas.
HOMEF está desafiando los esquemas de “desarrollo” extractivo arraigados en el racismo ambiental que amenazan los medios de vida de quienes dependen de los ríos y las costas. Están defendiendo el delta del Níger y a las personas que viven en él, y garantizando que los pescadores en pequeña escala tengan acceso a un medio de supervivencia.
