
Organización Fraternal Negra Hondureña (OFRANEH)
Las comunidades afroindígenas garífunas de Honduras se enfrentan a una gran variedad de amenazas contra su territorio, cultura, medios de subsistencia y sus vidas. A través de OFRANEH, hacen valer sus derechos y construyen poder.
La Organización Fraternal Negra Hondureña (OFRANEH), una organización de base de comunidades garífunas (indígenas afrodescendientes) de Honduras, trabaja para proteger los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales de las comunidades garífunas, especialmente en lo que respecta a la agricultura, la pesca y la defensa de la Madre Tierra.
Los territorios y derechos garífunas se ven cada vez más amenazados por los grandes desarrollistas que intentan apoderarse de sus tierras de cultivo, pesquerías y bosques con fines lucrativos, así como por los efectos del cambio climático en la costa caribeña. Otras amenazas importantes son la construcción prevista de «ciudades chárter», la expansión de las plantaciones de agrocombustibles, el desarrollo de megaproyectos turísticos, la expansión de la delincuencia organizada y la exploración y extracción de petróleo.
En los últimos meses y años, un número creciente y alarmante de activistas garífunas han sido asesinades o han desaparecido, lo que refleja el interés del Estado y las empresas por incorporar el territorio garífuna a proyectos que explotan la naturaleza con fines lucrativos.
A través de una red de emisoras de radio comunitarias, casas de sanación ancestrales y otros proyectos, OFRANEH promueve la educación sanitaria y medioambiental, apoya el uso de la lengua garífuna, fomenta el desarrollo de liderazgos entre la juventud y las mujeres y coordina acciones comunitarias para defender los territorios ancestrales. OFRANEH también participa en la construcción de movimientos nacionales, regionales e internacionales contra la militarización y en favor de la justicia climática.
