Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF)

Rural Nigerians are seeing the rivers and groundwater they depend on get poisoned from oil and gas production. But even as the global demand for Nigeria’s oil grows, the Health of Mother Earth Foundation is organizing with communities to protect their homes and environment.

Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) is an internationally known Nigerian ecological think tank and advocacy organization working to defend water and lives against the destruction caused by extractive industry. They strive to put the actual needs of people and the environment ahead of corporate profits and governmental power.

Advocacy and awareness are huge pieces of this effort. Documenting and reporting corporate misconduct and publicizing their crimes have won victories in holding companies accountable. HOMEF recognizes that progress is impossible without coordination and solidarity across movements, so they engage with a variety of groups fighting against the extractive economy including peasant-led food movements and Indigenous communities.

HOMEF is challenging extractive “development” schemes rooted in environmental racism which threaten the livelihoods of those who depend on rivers and coastlines. They are defending the Niger Delta, and the people who live on it, and ensuring small scale fishers have access to a means of survival.
