The Authoritarian face of the “Green Revolution” in Rwanda

September 2011

Rwanda is the first nation to sign the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP). The CAADP is one of the many weapons deployed in Africa’s so-called Green Revolution, designed to produce better yields through investments in agriculture. Those investments, however, focus on technology (like genetically modified seeds and chemical fertilizers) and expansive monocrops — ignoring local knowledge, successful intercropping techniques and displacing peasant farmers. A recent article by our colleagues at GRAIN explores the incursion of agribusiness into Rwanda and offers a counter argument for food sovereignty.

The article “The authoritarian face of the “Green Revolution”: Rwanda capitulates to agribusiness” is available in English, French and Spanish.
