Guatemalan Peasants Violently Evicted [Again] in Resistance to Mining

Pictures make the struggles of our global partners “real” in a way that words cannot.

The images in the video below make real the courage, resilience and vulnerability of communities in resistance to mining. For more than two years, peaceful protestors in San Jose del Golfo, Guatemala have been part of a community resistance, known as La Puya, with round-the-clock blockades to prevent mining equipment from entering. They have experienced violence (including gunshots) and victories (when the construction of the mine came to a halt last year).

With both solidarity and grants, Grassroots International continues to support these organized movements to protect land, water and livelihoods from international mining companies intent on grabbing resources despite local opposition.
