Dearest friends at Grassroots International,
Enough has been said by enough people about Arafat's illness, which led to his death, about who he was and what it will be like without him. Let's allow our thoughts to go back to meeting him after his arrival in Gaza, ten years ago.
A group of Israelis, Jews and Arabs on a welcoming visit, were sitting waiting for him to enter the hall - on some back benches a group of Palestinian women and children. When Arafat came in, surrounded by a crowd of body-guards all much taller than him, we first only saw glimpses of the kufiya on his head. But suddenly he freed himself, his broad smile radiated happiness and hope, and he started to shake hands with everybody - the backbenches first, taking special care not to miss one child.
The Steering Committee of the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation extends its sympathy to the Palestinian people on the death of President Yasser Arafat.
With hearts full of sadness, PCHR mourns the passing away of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat (Abu Ammar), and submit sincere consolations to his family and to the Palestinian people who are witnessing severe times as they are seeing their leader for the last time, who represented the symbol their struggle for liberty and independence. The passing away of Abu Ammar is the loss of a prominent Arab-Palestinian leader, who had been a symbol for the Palestinian cause for 40 years.

It is with great sadness that NCHR offers its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the individuals who lost their lives in the violence and terror that has gripped Port-au-Prince during the past few days. Our condolences are also extended to the Haitian National Police as an institution as they deal with the loss of several of their fellow officers and comrades.
NCHR is disturbed by the level of violence and strongly denounces the increasing insecurity throughout the country in general, but specifically the recent events in the capital.
Over 66 Palestinians, including 19 children, have been killed and at least 246 injured since the Israeli Occupying Forces (IOF) launched a renewed incursion into the northern Gaza Strip in a large scale operation called "days of penitence". It is the largest and deadliest offensive in Gaza in more than four years.
IOF, reinforced by over 200 tanks & armored personnel carriers and Apache helicopters, opened fire on the densely heavily populated Jabalya refugee camp and residential area in the village of Bait Lahiya.
Dear Friend of PARC,
