Co-Executive Director

Sara Mersha is Co-Executive Director of Grassroots International. Her work in this role builds upon more than thirteen prior years of experience as Director of Grantmaking and Advocacy at Grassroots International, from 2010-2023. Sara’s work with Grassroots International’s Program Team involved building and maintaining long-term relationships with partner organizations and social movements led by peasants, Indigenous Peoples, Black and Afrodescendant communities, women, and youth in the Global South. Sara also coordinated Grassroots International’s social action work, in collaboration with other US allies.

Sara is a former board member of the Grassroots Global Justice Alliance and is currently on the Planning Committee and Board of the Movement Generation Justice and Ecology Project. Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, she has spent the majority of her life in the United States and brings years of experience connecting local community organizing (such as with Direct Action for Rights & Equality in Providence, RI) with broader movement building efforts.

Sara lives on Wampanoag and Massachusett territory (Boston) and enjoys learning more about growing food and connecting with the Earth as a member of Movement Family Farm, a collectively owned Black organic farm located in New Hampshire. Most importantly, she is a mama to Ayana and stepmom to Grace, who are her greatest teachers.
