
Comedores Sociales de Puerto Rico
Durante años, los gobiernos de Puerto Rico y los Estados Unidos han recortado y privatizado los servicios sociales para pagar las deudas coloniales. Sin embargo, Comedores Sociales de Puerto Rico es consciente de que la población del archipiélago no puede comer austeridad. A través de las cocinas comunitarias, los Comedores Sociales llevan la comida a la mesa y ponen en práctica la soberanía alimentaria.
Comedores Sociales de Puerto Rico es una iniciativa autogestionada de distribución de alimentos a través de cocinas colectivas centradas en la solidaridad. Se construyeron sobre la idea de que «podamos satisfacer nuestras necesidades comunes desde abajo». Trabajan para combatir el hambre al colectivizar soluciones y dejar de depender del Estado, del Gobierno estadounidense y de las fundaciones filantrópicas tradicionales.
Los Comedores Sociales tienen muchas cocinas comunitarias en las que la gente puede trabajar o hacer donaciones a cambio de comida. De este modo, la comunidad recupera sus propios recursos y mano de obra y ayuda al movimiento a mantenerse. Cocina Rebelde es un ejemplo. Mientras sirven comida, su membresía también recibe formación política. Incluye formación práctica sobre organización y educación en economías populares solidarias, desde una perspectiva feminista y con la vista puesta en soluciones colectivas. Los Comedores Sociales también apoyan a otros movimientos presentes sobre el terreno al proporcionar alimentos para eventos y organizar protestas.
Incluso antes del huracán María, el 35 % de Puerto Rico padecía inseguridad alimentaria. Comedores Sociales va más allá del capitalismo y lucha por la soberanía alimentaria para que la tierra y los alimentos dejen de ser instrumentos de dominación.
