Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH)
A lo largo de décadas de lucha, el COPINH ha expulsado a decenas de explotaciones madereras ilegales de los territorios del pueblo lenca de Honduras. También ha recuperado más de 200 títulos de propiedad de tierras comunales indígenas y ha llevado la voz de las comunidades indígenas a la esfera internacional.
El Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH) se fundó a principios de la década de 1990 para luchar por los derechos del pueblo lenca de Honduras a su territorio y cultura ancestrales. También trabaja para erradicar el patriarcado, la opresión y las relaciones de desigualdad entre mujeres y hombres, y para promover relaciones de equidad y respeto a la diversidad sexual. A lo largo de los años transcurridos desde su fundación, el COPINH se ha convertido en una de las voces más fuertes en Mesoamérica y en el mundo a la hora de defender los derechos de los pueblos indígenas y ha trabajado activamente para fortalecer y unificar los movimientos sociales hondureños.
Desde principios de 2013, el COPINH ha liderado la lucha contra Agua Zarca, un megaproyecto de cuatro grandes represas en la cuenca del río Gualcarque, que privatizaría el río, usurparía su territorio y violaría los derechos ancestrales e indígenas. El pueblo lenca ha resistido con valentía a la construcción de la represa de Agua Zarca en su territorio, a pesar de los numerosos ataques, la criminalización de sus liderazgos y los intentos de asesinato. Actualmente, las fuentes de financiación internacionales se han retirado del proyecto y lo han bloqueado de facto, lo que supone una importante victoria para el movimiento.
En 2016, Berta Cáceres, cofundadora del COPINH y conocida a escala internacional, fue asesinada. En palabras del COPINH y otros movimientos hondureños, «¡Berta no murió; se multiplicó!» A pesar de las continuas amenazas e intimidaciones, los movimientos de base siguen organizándose en favor de los derechos humanos, la justicia medioambiental, la protección de los territorios indígenas sagrados y para que se haga justicia por Berta Cáceres. En 2021, uno de los principales responsables intelectuales del asesinato fue declarado culpable. La búsqueda de sanación a través de la justicia continúa.
