Casa Pueblo (La maison du peuple)
La démocratie et la souveraineté de Porto Rico dépendent de la rupture de la dépendance énergétique de l'archipel à l'égard des États-Unis. C'est là que Casa Pueblo est intervenue, en construisant une infrastructure énergétique alternative afin de bâtir un Porto Rico libre et souverain.
Casa Pueblo est une organisation communautaire et un centre culturel axé sur la protection et la gestion des ressources naturelles. Créée en 1980 pour mettre fin à une exploitation minière, elle s’est ensuite orientée vers la promotion du développement durable, en particulier de l’indépendance énergétique. Dans les années 1990, Casa Pueblo a réussi à mettre un terme à un projet d’exploitation aurifère massive sur 15 000 hectares de terres socialement et écologiquement importantes, créant ainsi une nouvelle forêt protégée gérée par les communautés elles-mêmes. Après l’ouragan Maria, Casa Pueblo a joué un rôle essentiel dans la réponse aux catastrophes, notamment en ce qui concerne les questions énergétiques, et a poursuivi ses efforts depuis lors. Elle a développé un micro-réseau pour générer et distribuer collectivement l’énergie nécessaire aux entreprises urbaines d’Adjuntas, à Porto Rico, où Casa Pueblo est basée. À ce jour, elle a aidé des dizaines de magasins, de restaurants et d’autres bâtiments, y compris des maisons, à fonctionner grâce à l’énergie solaire autonome, détenue et contrôlée par la communauté. Porto Rico se trouve à un moment critique où se décide l’avenir énergétique du pays. Sous le slogan « le droit à l’énergie pour tou·te·s », Casa Pueblo contribue à faire en sorte que le pays s’éloigne du modèle colonial de dépendance aux combustibles fossiles et s’oriente vers la souveraineté énergétique.
