Emergency Fund for Haiti Hurricane Relief and Rebuilding

Hurricane Matthew made a direct hit on Haiti on October 4, pounding the island nation with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. The first Category 4 storm to hit Haiti in more than 50 years, the cyclone assaulted the precarious infrastructure and flooded the denuded countryside. As Rosnel Jean Baptiste from Tet Kole explains: “Haiti is a very vulnerable country — and because of our vulnerability hurricanes do not pass by without doing terrible damage.”

Families throughout the country are suffering from the devastation – particularly along Haiti’s South and Southwest coast – and need vital emergency financial support for Haitian-led recovery efforts. Grassroots International has worked in Haiti for 24 years and has strong. Our long-lasting partnerships with groups in Haiti allow us to get much-needed funds directly into the hands of Haitians who are leading the recovery efforts during this critical time.

There must not be a repeat of the mistake of relief efforts after the earthquake of 2010, when hundreds of millions of dollars in aid went to top-down projects that did little to help the grassroots communities.

In 2010, Grassroots International was one of the few international funders whose support reached communities on the forefront of responding to the crisis.
