Family Secrets: My Grandmother’s Muffins
This recipe was handed down from my grandmother. My mom now makes these muffins for almost every holiday or special occasion. They are particularly good on winter mornings when made with blueberries picked over the summer and frozen fresh.
Until recently, I had never actually made these muffins myself or even seen my mom making them. She always starts them early in the morning before anyone else is up. The aroma of fresh baked muffins would eventually draw me out of bed.
Not wanting to submit a recipe I hadn’t tried myself, I made a batch last night.
They were good–very good even–but somehow not quite as good as when my mom makes them.
I wonder what her secret is.
Nana’s Blueberry Muffins
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 cup melted butter
1/2 cup milk
2 cups blueberries (if using frozen berries dust lightly with flour)
Mix the sugar, egg, flour, baking powder, butter and milk together. Gently fold in the berries. Spoon the batter into muffin tins, filling them almost to the top. Sprinkle the tops with sugar. Bake at 400 degrees for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Makes approximately 1 dozen muffins.
