On Human Rights Day, POHDH, Celebrates 20 years of Human Rights Promotion and Defense in Haiti
On December 10, 2011, the Platform of Haitian Human Rights Organizations (POHDH) will celebrate 20 years of human rights promotion and defense in Haiti. A partner of Grassroots International, POHDH is a non-partisan association of eight non-profit, non-governmental Haitian rights organizations bound by shared beliefs in human rights (individual and collective), democracy, and public education around the issues of social, political, and cultural rights.
POHDH shares its anniversary with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, commemorating its 63rd year on December 10. POHDH describes the UN Declaration as “a reference instrument for all institutions, organizations, and human rights activists around the world.” POHDH is using this double anniversary as an opportunity to highlight the continuing struggle for human rights in Haiti by advocating for the rights of women, children, and disabled persons in a series of conferences, workshops, and reflections from November 22 through December 12. In addition to these events, POHDH will continue their human rights monitoring and education work across the more than 1,300 refugee camps established in Port-au-Prince following the 2010 earthquake. POHDH is one of the few local Haitian organizations documenting conditions in the camps while demanding accountability from the Haitian government and international NGOs.
