Defesa dos direitos humanos
Seja com prisões injustas, sequestros ou assassinatos, os/as ativistas de movimentos sociais são alvos de violações de direitos humanos em todo o mundo. Apoiamos movimentos para fortalecer a segurança coletiva; monitorar e documentar violações; fazer campanha contra a impunidade; tomar medidas legais; e pressionar pelo reconhecimento de novas formas de direitos humanos.
Visão geral do impacto
A polarização política e a busca por lucros levaram a uma intensificação dos ataques a comunidades já marginalizadas, mas as pessoas visadas estão agindo para exigir, defender e realizar seus direitos humanos básicos.
No Brasil, o campesinato, que tem de lidar com o roubo de suas terras, está recebendo treinamento em defesa legal. Na Palestina e no Haiti, ativistas de direitos humanos estão documentando abusos e levando casos ao Tribunal Penal Internacional. Em Honduras, movimentos indígenas e afrodescendentes estão ganhando processos contra assassinos apoiados por empresas. Além disso, em nível global, os movimentos sociais têm se unido para desenvolver instrumentos legais (por exemplo, relacionados a direitos territoriais e direitos do campesinato) e conseguir que eles sejam adotados pelos órgãos da ONU. Os movimentos sociais também estão formando suas próprias redes globais para preencher as lacunas existentes no monitoramento e na defesa dos direitos humanos.
Trabalhos que estamos acompanhando:
- Esforços contínuos para obter justiça para Berta Cáceres e demais ativistas indígenas e afrodescendentes assassinados/as e sequestrados/as em Honduras;
- Uma campanha global para a implementação da Declaração das Nações Unidas sobre os Direitos dos Camponeses e Outras Pessoas que trabalham em Áreas Rurais;
- Denúncias de violações contra os povos palestino e garífuna a órgãos como o Tribunal Penal Internacional e a Comissão Interamericana de Direitos Humanos;
- A documentação de abusos de direitos humanos na Palestina, no Brasil, no Haiti e em outros países;
- A formação de uma aliança internacional que coordene a defesa dos direitos humanos em todos os movimentos globais.
A luta por justiça muitas vezes leva os/as ativistas a um confronto direto com forças estatais, corporativas e paramilitares interessadas em manter a desigualdade e o poder.
Em 2022, essas forças assassinaram mais de 400 defensores/as dos direitos humanos em todo o mundo. A militarização da polícia e a extração da natureza têm levado a uma violenta repressão aos direitos democráticos. A polarização política em meio ao desespero econômico levou a ainda mais golpes da direita e ataques de justiceiros a comunidades já marginalizadas.
Essa violência foi exemplificada pelo assassinato em 2016 de nossa querida colega agitadora Berta Cáceres, de nosso parceiro, o COPINH, em Honduras. Berta foi assassinada por se opor a uma barragem que teria atravessado o rio e o território sagrados do povo lenca. Com o apoio de aliados de dentro e fora de Honduras, incluindo a Grassroots International, o COPINH pressionou com sucesso os tribunais hondurenhos para que processassem o Estado e as forças corporativas por trás desse homicídio.
Conforme tem sido descrito por muitos organizadores no Haiti, o país enfrenta várias crises profundas e convergentes, e empresas e estados ocidentais estão entre os responsáveis. Nossas entidades parceiras estão desenvolvendo sua capacidade de monitorar os abusos, ajudar pessoas que sofrem violações de direitos humanos e acabar com a cultura de impunidade.
Na Palestina, as organizações de direitos humanos em Gaza e na Cisjordânia estão documentando os abusos cometidos pela violência colonial contínua por parte de Israel. Toda semana, profissionais de direitos humanos enfrentam postos de controle e bloqueios para rastrear cada ferimento e morte causados pelas bombas israelenses. Essas organizações estão levando essas violações à luz perante o Tribunal Penal Internacional.
Nossas entidades parceiras também estão desafiando as limitações das estruturas de direitos humanos existentes ao desenvolverem suas próprias estruturas. Um exemplo poderoso é a adoção histórica da Declaração sobre os Direitos dos Camponeses e Outras Pessoas que Trabalham em Áreas Rurais pela Assembleia Geral da ONU em 2018, após anos de esforço por parte de nossa entidade parceira global La Vía Campesina e organizações aliadas.
