
Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra – MST
No Brasil, apenas 1,6% dos proprietários dominam 47% das terras privadas. Mas o Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) usa o direito constitucional à reforma agrária para construir um Brasil mais igualitário, com os/as pequenos/as agricultores/as no controle dos sistemas alimentares.
Contrário à distribuição altamente desigual de terras e de riqueza no Brasil, o MST segue na vanguarda da luta por uma reforma agrária justa. Como o maior movimento popular da América Latina, o MST atua junto aos/às camponeses/as sem-terra na identificação e na ocupação de terras subutilizadas, na conquista da titulação e no uso produtivo da terra. O movimento usa os direitos legais à reforma agrária e à desapropriação de terras, garantidos pela Constituição brasileira, e a ação social para mobilizar as pessoas que vivem em condições de falta de terra e empobrecimento para uma vida em lares, com agricultura comunal e dignidade.
A atuação do MST conquistou o assentamento de mais de 1,5 milhão de famílias em 17 milhões de acres de terra, e hoje mais de 120 mil famílias vivem em acampamentos, aguardando o assentamento. O setor de saúde oferece serviços de saúde comunitária às famílias e, durante a pandemia de Covid-19, distribuiu mais de seis mil toneladas de alimentos, sobretudo para moradores/as urbanos/as em situação de necessidade. O MST também é um dos movimentos de camponeses/as e trabalhadores/as sem-terra mais poderosos do mundo, organizando a luta pela “Reforma Agrária Popular”, pela soberania alimentar e pela justiça climática.
A Grassroots International atua junto ao MST em nível estadual e nacional no apoio à agricultura sustentável, na assistência jurídica, na formação de juventudes e lideranças e em projetos de saúde popular. Nos estados de Pernambuco e Maranhão, a Grassroots International fornece recursos para a expansão de práticas agrícolas sustentáveis usadas por camponeses/as assentados/as na produção de alimentos saudáveis para as famílias e comunidades próximas, dá formação para a próxima geração de organizadores/as por meio de oficinas e intercâmbios, além de oferecer assistência jurídica em casos relacionados aos direitos políticos e econômicos dos/as camponeses/as sem-terra. Em nível nacional, a Grassroots International apoia um programa abrangente de formação em agroecologia – uma prática agrícola que é saudável para as pessoas e para a terra, com base tanto nos conhecimentos tradicionais quanto na ciência moderna e fundamentada na soberania alimentar. Também apoiamos o setor de saúde do MST – inclusive em conferências nacionais de agentes comunitários/as de saúde.
