MaywaMontenegro de Wit

Maywa Montenegro de Wit, mixed Quechua-Peruvian and Dutch, works as an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (Ramaytush-Ohlone territory). Maywa has a transdisciplinary background, bringing experience in molecular biology and science journalism to inform her current research on knowledge politics at the intersection of agroecology, food sovereignty, and peasant and Indigenous led efforts to transform food systems toward justice and sustainability. Maywa has specific interests in technology as a site of struggle and is currently working on several projects related to gene editing, data, and the politics of food system datafication. Asking if, by whom, and how technologies can work on behalf of anti-capitalist, anti-imperial, and de/anti-colonial world-making is an ongoing area of inquiry that Maywa is especially excited to share knowledge about. In addition to teaching, mentoring, and doing research at UCSC, Maywa is a co-founder of the Agroecology Research-Action Collective, serves as Associate Editor of the journal for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, and is a long-distance runner.
