Take Action
Our partnerships are the core of our advocacy work. To guide our advocacy actions, we ask ourselves questions like: “How does a Haitian peasant experience U.S., corporate and global institutions’ policies and procedures?” and, “What can we do to influence our decision makers and offer a hand of solidarity?”
We work in coalitions—national and international—with targeted constituencies and organizations advocating for fair agricultural and trade policies and for citizens’ rights to food, water and healthy communities.
The ongoing campaigns we work on are:
- The Global Agrarian Reform Campaign
- The U.S. Food Sovereignty Campaign
- The U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation
Here are a few ways you can take action that will make a difference:
Support the Global Agrarian Reform Campaign
The Global Agrarian Reform Campaign lies at the heart of the Via Campesina’s work. The Via Campesina is a global movement of family farmers, agricultural workers and rural communities that fight for alternatives to corporate-controlled agricultural policies. Their Global Agrarian Reform Campaign advocates for peoples’ rights to land to grow food.
Internationally, they seek to influence the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization to promote international principles and policies guaranteeing fair distribution of land. To advance agrarian reform at the local level, they work with the FoodFirst Information and Action Network (FIAN) to alert the public of specific land rights violations from Brazil to Indonesia. To support rural peoples’ land rights, sign up for FIAN’s Emergency Network at www.fian.org.
Sign on to the U.S. Food Sovereignty Campaign
The National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) coordinates the U.S. Food Sovereignty Campaign, which is also a Via Campesina campaign. The NFFC is working to pass the Food from Family Farms Act (FFFA) in the U.S. Congress. The FFFA is an alternative U.S. Farm Bill centered on guaranteeing for family farmers a fair price for their products and access to local and national markets in which to sell without being undermined by distorting agribusiness monopolies. The FFFA calls for international cooperation to ensure that no nation suffers from the dumping of cheap food imports on their markets.
To become part of the U.S. Food Sovereignty Campaign, learn more about the FFFA and sign-up for the Food Sovereignty E-Newsletter, a monthly newsletter that provides updates and suggested actions, go to www.nffc.net.
Join the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and Stop the Wall
The U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation is a coalition that educates and mobilizes the public to change U.S. policies that aid Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem. The Campaign advocates for respect for human rights, and international law, arguing that ending the occupation will help the U.S. achieve its spoken goals for stability in the Middle East. The Campaign supports several advocacy efforts including the Stop the Wall Campaign, a Grassroots International partner. Stop the Wall holds an annual International Day Against the Wall on November 9th.
