Berta Cáceres Murder: Sentencing and Struggle

Berta Cáceres and others were murdered for their activism defending the Lenca people and their land in Honduras. Her organization the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), a Grassroots International partner, released this statement after a trial sentenced some of her killers.

IMPUNITY DOES NOT END WITH A SENTENCE

In response to the reading of the sentences from the first trial against the material authors of the assassination of our comrade Berta Cáceres, the daughters and son of Berta Cáceres along with COPINH declare the following:

1. Impunity does not end with the sentencing of the material authors. There is sufficient evidence to prosecute and sanction members of the Atala family and others for the murder of Berta Cáceres.
2. The Public Ministry led by Óscar Chinchilla must stop making excuses and must bring to trail and prosecute Daniel Atala Midence, José Eduardo Atala Zablah, Pedro Atala Zablah and Jacobo Atala Zablah, among others, for their role in the assassination of Berta Cáceres.
3. The State of Honduras faces international processes for the participation of public officials and the failure to properly investigate the assassination of Berta Cáceres.
4. The lack of justice in Honduras necessitates the installation of an independent mission that carries out the trial and prosecution of those responsible for the assassination of Berta Cáceres.
5. This sentence is the first crack in the wall of total impunity that sustains the criminal structure responsible for the crime. This sentence is a result of the tenacity of the struggle of COPINH, the family and national and world solidarity.

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES

Berta, our sister, will continue to be a symbol of struggle and hope for all the territories that continue the battle to defend life and that are currently being persecuted and criminalized by this dictatorship. This sentence is the beginning of a relentless path of justice for the people and for Honduras.

At COPINH we continue with hope defending the blood of the earth, and building to coexist in a just, dignified and life affirming way. We do not falter in our struggle that Berta lived and lives.

This sentence was read on the December 2nd, 2019 in the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

LA IMPUNIDAD NO TERMINA CON LA SENTENCIA

Las hijas e hijo de Berta Cáceres junto al COPINH tras la lectura de la sentencia del primer juicio contra los autores materiales del asesinato de nuestra compañera Berta Cáceres hacemos conocer lo siguiente:

1. La impunidad no termina con la sentencia a los autores materiales. Existen pruebas suficientes para procesar y sancionar a integrantes de la familia Atala y otros por el asesinato de Berta Cáceres.
2. El Ministerio Público dirigido por Óscar Chinchilla debe dejar de poner excusas para procesar y requerir el sometimiento a juicio de Daniel Atala Midence, José Eduardo Atala Zablah, Pedro Atala Zablah y Jacobo Atala Zablah, entre otros, por el asesinato de Berta Cáceres.
3. El Estado de Honduras enfrenta a procesos internacionales por la participación de funcionarios públicos y la omisión de investigar adecuadamente el asesinato de Berta Cáceres.
4. La falta de justicia en Honduras hace necesaria la instalación de una misión independiente que lleve adelante el procesamiento y sometimiento a juicio de los responsables del asesinato de Berta Cáceres
5. Esta sentencia es una primera fisura al muro de impunidad total que sostiene a la estructura criminal responsable del crimen consecuencia de la tenacidad de la lucha del COPINH, la familia y la solidaridad nacional y del mundo.

LA LUCHA SIGUE

Berta, nuestra hermana seguirá siendo un símbolo de lucha y esperanza para todos los territorios que hoy continúan la batalla en defensa de la vida y que hoy son perseguidos y criminalizados por esta dictadura. Esta sentencia es el inicio de un camino implacable de justicia para los pueblos y para Honduras.

En el COPINH seguimos con esperanza defendiendo la sangre de la tierra, construyendo para coexistir de manera justa, digna y por la vida. No desfallecemos en nuestra lucha en la que Berta vive y vive.
