Charting a Bold Path for Food Sovereignty

Nine months following the historic 3rd Nyéléni Global Forum in Sri Lanka, which brought together over 500 social movement representatives from across the world in September 2025, the food sovereignty movement has given birth to an ambitious plan: the Common Political Action Agenda.

The Common Political Action Agenda (CPAA) is a comprehensive roadmap organized around six interrelated axes of struggle: constructing people’s democracy and rights; building people’s economies based on solidarity and feminism; advancing food sovereignty and agroecology; securing land, water, and territories through popular agrarian reform; achieving comprehensive health for all; and ensuring climate justice through a feminist just energy transition.

“This is the tool that we built, as peoples and social movements from all across the globe, to forge the path for the systemic transformation that we want for a better world now and forever!”

To advance these struggles, the CPAA details a strategy for collective action centered on joint mobilization, internationalist solidarity, and transformative policy advocacy. It commits movements to an ambitious process of political formation and popular communication to reclaim narratives and strengthen grassroots power from the bottom up.

The CPAA is intended as a shared political reference point for collective struggle. Its implementation depends on the continued engagement of movements and allies to translate its priorities into coordinated action, campaigns, and resistance across territories and regions. As stressed in the document:

“Most importantly, we are committed to bringing this work back to our communities. We recognize that our aspirations must be grounded in reality, linked to regional and local policies, and translated into concrete actions that make a real difference in the communities and territories where we live and work.”

Toward these ends, movements are encouraged to develop collectively contextualized strategic action plans for implementing the CPAA.

Grassroots International is honored to have accompanied the Nyéléni process over decades and recognizes the massive leap forward that the CPAA represents. Having been there at the most recent forum and remembering the daily assemblies, break-out groups, lunches, tours, and so much more, as well as the extensive follow-up sense-making processes after the forum, we affirm the collective labor of love that it took to reach this point. And we appreciate, much like the outputs of the first and second Nyéléni forums, what a guiding star the CPAA represents for a continually evolving and diversifying movement confronting an increasingly complex and difficult context.

The issues facing people and the planet today may be vast, but social movements are ever more equipped to confront them. Onward in the struggle for systemic transformation!
